Protect Your Skin from the Ravages of the Sun

Now that summer has arrived with its warm temperatures and long sunny days, it’s time
to focus more attention on skin care products that can protect you from the sun’s
damaging rays. In particular, you should be using skin care products that provide
protection from the widest spectrum of ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun possible,
because those rays are the biggest contributor to the physical signs of aging skin, other
than aging itself.

How Does Ultraviolet Light Damage Skin?

In addition to providing warmth and light, the sun emits a spectrum of UV radiation that
penetrates and damages your skin. “Long wave” UVA rays penetrate the deepest and
can reach into the “dermis,” the thickest layer of your skin. Exposure to UVA rays over
time causes wrinkling and premature skin aging, as well as suppression of the immune
system and can play a role in the formation of skin cancer cells. Short wave UVB rays
only penetrate the skin’s surface area, but it is these rays that are the primary cause of
sunburn. Sunburned skin represents damaged skin, and when repeated over time,
enhances the overall physical signs of aging skin. UVB rays also play a role in the
development of cancer and melanoma. The bottom line is that people need to protect
themselves from both forms of UV.

Making Sense of Sunscreen Products

Sunscreen products were initially developed to protect against the easily recognized
rapid sunburn damage caused by UVB rays. In fact, the familiar “sun protection factor”
(SPF) label found on all sunscreen products is primarily referring to how well the
product prevents skin exposure to UVB. The SPF doesn’t specifically cover UVA,
although we are exposed to about 20 times more UVA than UVB, unless the label also
claims “broad-spectrum.” Thus, to make sure you are receiving the fullest protection
possible from both types of UV, make sure that your skin care product’s SPF is “broad-spectrum.”
The active ingredients in sunscreen products work as UV filters by absorbing, scattering
or reflecting the sun’s rays, and are categorized as either chemical (organic) or physical
(inorganic). Most sunscreens today contain between two and seven of these UV filters,
some targeting rays in the UVA spectrum, others targeting those in the UVB spectrum,
and a couple which do both. Other ingredients are also added, such as skin
moisturizers, water proofers and preservatives, and sunscreens can be found in a wide
variety of formations, whether as creams, lotions, gels, sprays, powders, or sticks/bars.

Sunscreen Products and Acne

Some people feel that they should avoid sunscreens because their formations can lead
to acne or the development of whiteheads and blackheads. These effects are generally
attributed to products that may clog the pores, as well as on how some chemical filters
in sunscreen can increase heat on the skin. To avoid these concerns, look for labels
that say “non-comedogenic” and/or “non-acnegenic,” both of which contain formulations
less likely to clog pores. Those susceptible to heat-induced skin breakouts should
consider formulations that rely on physical rather than chemical UV filters, as the
physical ones—such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide—transfer less heat to the skin.

Get Cheeky This Summer With Tru Glō Medspa’s Restylane® Lyft Treatment

If you have deep wrinkling around your mouth and excessive sagging skin around your cheeks consider going deep to bolster skin volume to add fullness to the cheeks and mid face area, which will also help reduce prominent wrinkling around the mouth. Restylane® Lyft is not only the deepest dermal filler of the Restylane® product line, but also the most volume inducing due to the larger size of its hyaluronic acid gel particles.

The increase and deepening of wrinkles around the mouth and nose, along with the sagging and loss of definition of the cheek areas can be a natural result of aging. As we age, collagen and protein in the skin breaks down and the natural fat surrounding the cheekbone deteriorates. A time passes, the sagging skin and hollow cheek affect becomes more prominent, as does the deepening of those distinctive lines around your mouth known as “laugh lines,” “puppet lines,” “marionette lines,” or just “smile lines,” but technically referred to as “nasolabial folds.”

Dermal Fillers Effective Means for Adding Volume, Easing Wrinkles

Injectable dermal fillers are an easy, effective, non-surgical means for replacing lost skin volume in the face, and for displacing those deepening facial lines. The Restylane® line of dermal fillers are also natural, as they consist of injectable gels containing hyaluronic acid, an organic sugar generated by the body and used for lubricating joints, muscles and skin.

Formerly branded as Perlane®, Restylane® Lyft was developed specifically to treat moderate to severe wrinkles, folds, depressed scars, and sagging cheek volume around the nose and mouth. Other Restylane® dermal fillers are used for medium to smaller depth wrinkles and volume loss. Restylane® Lyft is the “first and only FDA-approved filler to provide lift to cheeks and add volume to correct and smooth nasolabial folds.” As with the other Restylane® dermal fillers, Restylane® Lyft is minimally invasive, has few side effects, and little downtime.

Restylane® Lyft Procedure and Results

The Restylane® Lyft procedure consist of injections into the targeted areas, which are usually pre-numbed with a topical anesthetic and/or ice. Patient comfort during the procedure is also enhanced by a small amount of lidocaine, which is included in the Restylane® Lyft gel. The procedure generally takes between 15 to 40 minutes, depending upon number of injection sites, and some results may be noticed almost immediately. After the injections the hyaluronic acid will continue to work within the skin to attract moisture and additionally boost skin volume and elasticity, with full results generally noticeable within one to two weeks after treatment. Overall, results may vary among patients, and most Restylane® treatment plans are customized based on the individual’s aesthetic needs and goals.

Tru Glō Medspa is adding a new line of makeup to its facial spa product line that not only delivers “customized complexion perfection,” but does so “cruelty-free” without any testing on animals. The award-winning Glo Skin Beauty line of mineral-based makeup formulations was designed to enhance, protect and nourish all skin types, while offering wide variations in finish options and an exceptional shade gallery to accommodate all desired looks.

With almost 30 awards from professional associations and magazines since 2012, Glo Skin Beauty has established a solid reputation for developing high quality makeup for all skin types and natural conditions. With an eye toward makeup that can hold up to the harsh southwest Florida sun, Naples, Florida-based Tru Glō Medspa felt that Glo Skin Beauty’s line of makeup seemed like the perfect addition to its line of facial treatments.

Key Features of Glo Skin Beauty Makeup

Glo Skin Beauty relies on innovative technology and cutting edge research to combine plant derivatives with compatible firming, reparative, nutritive and antioxidant ingredients that work together to deliver long-lasting facial enhancement and beauty results. Among the key features of Glo Skin Beauty makeup are:

  • * Lasting coverage—Glo Skin Beauty only uses ultra-fine minerals in a triple-milled process that creates even, continuous and long lasting coverage applications.
  • * Powerful Antioxidants—Glo Skin Beauty’s makeup bases contain a proprietary mix of vitamins A, C, E and green tea extract for additional nourishing antioxidant protection.
  • * Talc free—All Glo Skin Beauty products are talc free, which helps them provide silky, even coverage that enhances skin beauty rather than highlighting imperfections.
  • * Paraben free—Part of Glo Skin Beauty’s research is devoted to identifying broad spectrum preservatives to ensure formula purity and longevity, so as to avoid the use of parabens, a group of synthetic compounds commonly used as preservatives. While the U.S. Food & Drug Administration allows limited use in many products such as makeup, cumulative exposure to parabens has been linked to cancer and hormone disruption.
  • * Rich color palette—Glo Skin Beauty’s vast color range—“from barely there to beautifully bold”—was developed to account for and celebrate everyone’s individuality, while also allowing for a “healthy sense of play.”

And Don’t Forget the Benefit of Being Cruelty Free

Go Skin Beauty has solidified its vow to never test its products on animals, use raw ingredients tested on animals, allow others to test on animals on Glo Skin’s behalf, or enter into business markets like China, where animal testing is required. Glo Skin Beauty is a member of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Beauty Without Bunnies Program, which PETA established to help connect consumers with cruelty-free brands, such as Glo Skin Beauty.

FDA Expands CoolSculpting® Treatment Options for Chin

Coolsculpting treatment for chin

With European approval in 2000, and U.S. FDA approval in 2012, CoolSculpting® has established a solid track record as an effective, minimally invasive fat removal treatment system, with more than six million treatments performed worldwide. Already FDA cleared to treat visible fat bulges in the thigh, abdomen, flank, back and submental (chin) area, the agency in December expanded submental treatment to cover all lax tissue in conjunction with fat in the double chin.

CoolSculpting® for the double chin had already been clinically proven to reduce fat by up to 20 percent with just one treatment to the affected area. The expanded approval for lax tissue was sought because doctors using CoolSculpting® had noticed the improved appearance of lax tissue along with the reduction in fat. A 2015 supplemental 18-week clinical study of CoolSculpting® in submental fat treatment determined that 77 percent of patients showed improvement in lax tissue appearance, with 75 percent of these patients expressing the belief that their chin lines looked more toned following the treatment.

CoolSculpting® Works by Putting the Chill on Fat Cells

Also known as “Cryolipolosis,” CoolSculpting® eliminates diet- and exercise-resistant fat by targeting such localized fat deposits with freezing. Once chilled, the fat cells crystalize and die, and are then permanently removed over the next few weeks and months by the body’s own natural metabolic processes. The surrounding skin and tissue, meanwhile, are unaffected because fat cells freeze at higher temperatures.

Because CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical and non-invasive procedure, there is no downtime or extensive recovery period, and limited side effects beyond light bruising and numbness around the vicinity of the treated area. Thus, CoolSculpting® is perfect for people who want to avoid the downtime, or are otherwise looking for alternatives to liposuction and other more invasive procedures.

So Easy That You Can Treat Two Areas With Duel CoolSculpting®

Whether muffin top, spare tire, secretary spread, or that aforementioned double chin, Naples, Florida-based Tru Glō Medspa can come up with a plan to help remove that unwanted fat and help you sculpt a firmer, more toned body and face. Because it’s likely that you have more than one area on your body that contains diet- and exercise-resistant fat, Tru Glō Medspa offers dual CoolSculpting® so that you can treat multiple stubborn fatty areas twice as fast.

And the actual treatment couldn’t be easier. An initial consultation with one of our specialists will tailor an individualized CoolSculpting® treatment plan designed to meet your goals by safely reducing problem fat pockets that are limiting your positive body image. Once in treatment the device—or two for those undergoing the dual CoolSculpting®—is strategically positioned and the controlled cooling slowly applied. During the treatment session you can read, surf the Internet or even take a nap. Once the session is concluded, you can typically return to work or engage in any other normal every-day activities.

If you’re ready to explore options such as CoolSculpting® for a means of reshaping a new you, call a reputable medical spa now for a free consultation. Tru Glō Medspa looks forward to meeting you and developing a CoolSculpting® plan that will take care of those stubborn fat deposits and firm up your body. Don’t Let Your Hands Give Away Your Age!

Don't let your hands give away your age- Hand Rejuvenation
You take care of yourself and you look and feel youthful… so why give away your age at the first hand shake? Your hands take a lot of abuse so it’s no wonder they are tired and worn out. Let’s think for a moment of all we do to our hands.
Would you ever consider doing this to the skin on your face?

  • Wash with any random soap 10 times a day or more
  • Not apply moisturizer after washing except maybe once or twice a day
  • Allow your skin to touch cleaning fluids and detergents
  • Go out in the sun and not apply sun screen

You would never do this to your face, but your hands are another story. They have been the tools which have helped us to get to where we are today. Let’s high five those awesome hands and head to the Medspa to reward them with rejuvenating treatments that turn back the hands of time.
Courtney Kelly, CME a medical esthetician from Tru Glo Medspa has a recommendation she calls the “Hand Rejuvenating Trifecta”, which includes 3 treatments which can be completed within a 2-week time frame.

Step 1: BBL BroadBand Light™

The first step is to erase the signs of aging by treating sun damage, broken capillaries and those dark spots from the backs of your hands. The Forever Young BBL Photofacial is best known for its ability to reverse facial skin damage. Patients on average appear ten years younger than their real age with BBL Photofacials. This same Sciton Laser technology is used on the hands by stimulating collagen to turn off aging while reversing photo damage and hyper pigmentation. BBL BroadBand Light™ will restore the skin on your hands to their natural beauty by smoothing and blending the color to create a vibrant and younger looking appearance.

Step 2: Chemical Peel

The next step is to address the condition of the skin on the back of your hands. A chemical peel will be used to create new tighter skin. Your treatment may range from a superficial to a deep treatment according to the degree of damage. A light peel with remove dead skin and refresh tired looking hands. If the skin on your hands is crepey looking you may want a deep peel to regain a youthful appearance.

Step 3: Injectable Fillers

The final age defying step to Ms. Kelly’s Hand Rejuvenating Trifecta is injectable dermal fillers. You can improve the appearance of your aging hands with fillers like RADIESSE® or Restylane®. As we age our hands lose subcutaneous fat and appear hollow which allows veins and tendons to become more prominent. These hand rejuvenating injectable treatments immediately restore volume loss and create softer and more visually appealing hands.
Hands Before and After Radiesse

Continued Hand Care Advice

Now that you have taken steps to rejuvenate your hands you will want to take a different approach when considering continued hand skin care. Here are a few tips from a medical esthetician which only take a few minutes a day.

Courtney Kelly, CME- Hand Care Tips

  • Add a small amount of the same products you use to care for and maintain the youthfulness of the skin on your face to the backs of your hands each time you use them.
  • Protect your hands from the sun with a waterproof UV defense sunscreen and apply it every day. The sun is a major contributor to skin damage.
  • Ask your esthetician to suggest a skin care solution for you based on the condition of the skin on your hands. She may suggest a brightening agent. Powerful skin brightening agents fade the look of accumulated damage and age spots while improving the appearance of texture.
